How To Get BIG Results With Small (Print) Classifieds
By Damon Musick

Howdy Subscribers!

Bet ya can’t guess which state I’m from. I’m fixin to tell ya. The great (BIG) state of Texas (pronounced Takes Us).

O.K. I don’t really talk with that much Texas drawl, but because I graduated from Texas A&M University I do have a tendency to say “Howdy” to people I meet. Howdy is the standard greeting on campus…or at least it was when I was an undergraduate (some years ago). Anyway…

What does any of this have to do with this issue’s feature article? Well, I’m fixin, er...going to tell you. Because Texas is a big state, we like to do things in a big way. What I hope to impart to you in this issue is how to get a big, or at least bigger than usual, response from using small classified ads.

If you are advertising your product, service, business opportunity or MLM program on a small budget, classified ads really can be an effective way to advertise.

But don’t make the same mistake that 99% of advertiser’s do when using classifieds... and that is...looking like every other classified ad and blending in to the crowd. How does one avoid this?

Easy.

Classified ads in print publications are an inexpensive way to reach a targeted audience, but have you noticed that most classified ads look the same when you quickly glance at the page? If your ad looks like all the rest, the chances of your ad getting noticed is greatly reduced.

If you are going to use classified ads in print publications you need to stand out from the crowd. Many publications offer classified ad options such as bold type, shaded background and/or a border.

Here’s what each option does for your ad;

1. Bold Type – Bold type automatically highlights your headline. Although this issue does not address headlines specifically, you must use a proven headline in order to get a greater response.

If you do have a proven, winning headline, using bold type will make it easier to read, hence drawing more attention to it.

2. Shaded Background – Here’s a quick and simple test. Go pick up a recent issue of any business opportunity magazine, turn to the classified ad section and notice which ad immediately catches your attention. Why did it attract your attention?

More than likely it was an ad that used a shaded or colored background. Using a shaded or colored background is one of the most effective ways to draw the reader’s eyes to your ad. The most effective color to use, if the option is available, is yellow.

Studies have shown that the human eye can focus the easiest on black text on a yellow background. Since most ads don’t use this option, by using it yourself, your ad will be seen by almost every reader who looks at the page.

3. Border – placing a border around your ad also helps draw the reader’s eyes to your ad. Studies have shown that a person can read text 26% faster if it is surrounded by a border. Why? Because the eye uses the border as a guide to know where to start and stop when scanning text.

Many print publications will offer one or more of the above mentioned options, i.e. bold type, shaded background, and border. If you want more than a mediocre response from your ad, consider using these options.

Yes, your ad may cost more by using these options, but your increased response should offset any extra you may have to pay.

Until next time, be safe and be happy!
