Take Your E-Business On The Road!
By Edward Langston

One problem that I've noticed with new e-commerce businessfolks is the fact that they often fail to think outside of the Internet. That is, they see two distinct and separate worlds -- the world of the Internet where their business resides, and the outside world where they live. So, they do ALL their business "work" on the Internet -- They advertise on the Internet, they buy supplies or services through the Internet, and they even communicate using the Internet.

This is not entirely a bad thing, especially since the Internet has many resources that are not usually available to the small business owner. I do believe, however, that if we focus ONLY on the Internet, we are missing out on many opportunities for marketing, promotion, and ultimately, sales.

Successful e-commerce "gurus" know that the best way to bring traffic to your site is to be seen in as many different places as possible, creating a "presence" for yourself. Your presence, however, doesn't have to be limited to the Web. If, for instance, you were marketing your business opportunity, you wouldn't have to limit yourself to e-zines, Internet newsletters, and web pages. You could also advertise in "the real world" by placing ads in a neighborhood newspaper, buying some cheap commercial time on a local radio station or cable station, or even putting a sign on your car! Anything that places your name (and web address) into the minds of people can be a help to your marketing efforts.

If you are marketing a tangible product along with your business opportunity, the possibilities are even greater. If, say, you were selling a number of products, it is very easy, using a color printer, to produce a simple brochure or flyer that describes your product range. These brochures could be given to associates, colleagues at work, friends, and family. You could even put it on the windshields of cars (PLEASE check local regulations before doing this, though!). These kind of flyers can be very helpful when trying to bring customers to your site.

There are many more ways that you can promote your business outside of the web, but the main point that I am trying to convey is that we should not be bound by the restrictions of our medium. The Web is a great place to do business, but that doesn't mean we should limit our business efforts to Internet endeavors. We need to always be "thinking outside the box" -- Literally!
